What is Taqwa?

Probably the best answer after ayaat of the Qur`an and the Sunnah of RasuluLlah صلى الله عليه و سلم is:

When what ‘Umar رضي الله عنه got when he asked Ubayy bin Ka‘b رضي الله عنه, “What is Taqwa?” Ubayy رضي الله عنه replied, “What would you do if you had to walk through a path of thorns?” ‘Umar رضي الله عنه answered, “I would roll up my sleeves and protect myself from them.” Ubayy رضي الله عنه said, “That is Taqwa.”

Explanation:

1) ‘Umar رضي الله عنه’s concern on knowing what Taqwa is unlike us Muslims nowadays who are not much concerned with our Iman.

2) His going to the Scholar of Qur`an again something which we do not practise. When our car is not functioning properly we go to the professional mechanic to get it fixed but when it comes to our Deen, we go to any layman and ask him to answer our Islamic queries.

3) The beautiful analogy used by Ubayy رضي الله عنه and this is also the Sunnah of RasuluLlah صلى الله عليه و سلم in his teaching.

4) The thorns can be interpreted as being the sins and all what Allah سبحانه و تعالى has made forbidden and clothes one’s Iman and this is Taqwa. Why do we protect our Iman? Because we have fear of Allah سبحانه و تعالى that He will punish us for our misdeeds
