The Martyrdom of ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه

بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم

الحمد الله

السلام عليكم و رحمت الله و بركاته

In 56H, Mu’awiyah رضي الله عنه decided to make his son, Yazid, the caliph. Many of the eminent Sahabah رضي الله عنه disagreed with this. And Mu’awiyah رضي الله عنه used to say, “None of the other has the ability to take the Khilafah, from Yazid besides ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr.” In 64H, Husayn ibn Numayr, after taking Madinah, besieged Makkah and whilst he was besieging Makkah, the news came that Yazid had passed away. The same Husayn ibn Numayr wanted to give ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه bay’ah but he رضي الله عنه refused to take his ba’yah because of the atrocities he had committed in Madinah and Makkah. Husayn ibn Numayr went back to Damascus. Then the son of Yazid, Mu’awiyah II, wanted to give bay’ah to him but before he could, he passed away. Marwan ibn al-Hakam, the next Khalifah, wanted to give ba’yah to ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه but when he left Damascus, ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad managed to convince him to not give ba’yah because ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad was the man who instigated the shahadah of Husayn رضي الله عنه and he knew if ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه became the Khalifah, his days were numbered. After Marwan ibn al-Hakam passed away, then ‘Abdul Malik ibn Marwan became the Khalifah and at that time there were Khalifatyn. One was the legitimate one: ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه from 64H and the other was the false Khalifah: ‘Abdul Malik ibn Marwan. Most of the people of Hijaz, Palestine and ‘Iraq gave bay’ah to ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه whilst only a handful from Damascus and Sham had given to ‘Abdul Malik ibn Marwan. What would happen is that, periodically there would be clashed between both armies until finally the army of ‘Abdul Malik ibn Marwan took over Basra and they killed the brother of ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله تعالى عنه , Mus’ab رضي الله تعالى عنه . Then on that occasion, ‘Abdul Malik ibn Marwan made an announcement, “Who is ready to take ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr?” And the tyrant of this Ummah stood up, a man called al Hajjaj ibn Yusuf ath-Thaqafi. And regarding him, ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul ‘Aziz (RahimahuLlah) said, “If all the previous Ummahs brought their tyrants and we only brought al Hajjaj ibn Yusuf ath-Thaqafi, his tyranny would be greater than all their tyrannies put together!” He said, “O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin! I will take him on because yesterday I saw a dream that I am killing ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr and then I am skinning him!” Then with a huge army, he set towards Makkah and besieged it. What they had was these huge catapults and in it they had these huge rocks and they would throw them into Makkah and scores of people would die. On occasions, these would even hit the house of Allah سبحانه و تعالى. And the narrations mention that ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه was praying Salah and one of these rocks fell close to him and the fire between was his chest and his beard. But he was so emerged and engrossed in his Salah that he didn’t’ even know what had happened. And the narrations mention that these huge catapults were around Makkah and what happened that lightning came from the sky and hit one of these catapults and al Hajjaj ibn Yusuf men were taken aback that this was the Adhaab of Allah سبحانه و تعالى but like all deviant and corrupt leaders, al Hajjaj used the Qur’an and hadith to substantiate his abhorrent actions. He said, “What you getting worried for? This is not the Adhaab of Allah! Have you not read the Qur’an where Allah سبحانه و تعالى when He would accept the sacrifices of the people a fire would come from the sky and it would burn the sacrifice. This is a sign from Allah سبحانه و تعالى is accepting our sacrifice.” And like all sheep, they said, “SubhanAllah Allahu Akbar Takbir!” And for 5 months and 17 days they besieged Makkah. Until the men of ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه became so weak that many of them could not carry their own swords. They had nothing to eat and the only thing they had to drink was the Zam-Zam. Al Hajjaj ibn Yusuf said, “Whoever leaves the side of ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr and comes to me, I will give them protection.” And he was saying to ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله تعالى عنه , “’AbduLlah! For you, you can go where ever you want leave Makkah where ever you want. If you don’t want, then come to ‘Abdul Malik ibn Marwan and he will do whatever he wants with you and then your final option is that you fight till death.” And the narrations mention, one by one, one by one all of the men of ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه left his side. In one day, 10,000 men left his side and he رضي الله عنه just had a handful of men left with him. Then he decided to go and visit his mother: Asmaa’ bint Abi Bakr رضي الله تعالى عنه .

He رضي الله عنه went to his mother, who was over 100 years old and was blind, when he entered the room, he gave her Salam and she رضي الله تعالى عنها replied to the Salam. Then she asked, “Where did the men of al-Hajjaj reach?” He رضي الله عنه said, “O’ my mother in death, I will find peace and tranquillity. O’ my mother! All my companions have left me until my own family and children have left my side and I only have a handful of people around me. And the people are ready to give me whatever I want form this Dunya what is your opinion my mother?” She رضي الله تعالى عنها said, “O’ my son! You are more knowledgeable regarding your circumstances than me. But I do say, if you know that you are on the truth, and then die like your companions and if you want the Dunya, then you are the most wretched of people because you have wasted yourself and your companions. And how long are you going to live in this Dunya?” Then she رضي الله تعالى عنها continued, “If you say that you are on the truth, but when your companions left you, you became weak. This is not the action of the free man and the people of Deen! And how long are you going to live in this Dunya?” He رضي الله عنه said, “O’ my mother, I’m scared that if they kill me, then they will mutilate my body and they will hang me up.” She رضي الله تعالى عنها said, “O’ my son! A slaughtered goat doesn’t feel the pain when it is skinned!” And when she said this, he رضي الله عنه stood up and kissed her upon her forehead and he said, “I swear by Allah, this is my opinion! I have no desire to live in this Dunya for my aspiration is the life of the here after and all my life I have stood up for truth but I wanted to know is your opinion so that your opinion strengthens my opinion!” And then his mother رضي الله تعالى عنها said, “Come closer my son!” When he رضي الله عنه came closer to her, she embraced him and when she did so, she felt that he had some metal armour on. And she رضي الله عنها said, “O’ my son! What is this? For people who want Shahaadah don’t wear this!” He رضي الله عنه said, “O’ my mother! I only did this to comfort you!” She رضي الله عنها said, “My son, take it off.” Then she said, “O’ my son! Tie your belt so when you fall, your ‘awrah is not exposed!” “O’ My son! Fight with bravery for you are the son of Zubayr and the grandson of Abu Bakr and your grandmother was Safiyyah.”

That day, AbduLlah رضي الله عنه fought like a thousand men from noon till evening and one-by-one all his men died until he was left alone by himself. He would repel huge numbers of men until finally, they threw a rock upon him and he was on the floor and was still fighting. Then they cut off his leg and finally, they martyred him. And narrations mention, when they martyred him, Makkah erupted with crying and al Hajjaj ibn Yusuf ath-Thaqafi stood up and said, “O’ people! Know ‘AbduLlah was the best of people but when he rebelled against the Khalifah, then he had to be removed from Makkah for Adam was best of People but when he rebelled against the command of Allah, he was removed from Jannah and Adam is better then ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr and Jannah is better than Makkah.” al Hajjaj came to the mother of ‘AbduLlah رضي الله عنه and wanted to break her resolve and he said, “How has Allah dealt with His enemy?” She رضي الله عنها said, “You may have corrupted this Dunya, but He has corrupted your Aakhirah!” Then he said, “I heard they call you Dhat-an-Nitaqayn?” And she رضي الله عنه said, “Yes, they do call me Dhat-an-Nitaqayn because I took off my waist belt and tore in 2 and I gave one to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and I kept one myself. Let me tell you one thing. I heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم say, ‘From Thaqif, two people will emanate. One will be a tyrant and other will be a liar. The lair that we have seen and the tyrant is you!’”

Then they beheaded ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه and stuck his body up. The men of al Hajjaj were saying, “Allahu Akbar Takbir!” And ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنه went by and he heard them saying Takbir and he رضي الله عنه turned towards his body رضي الله عنه and said, “I was there the day ‘Abdullah was born and I am here the day he has died and I heard those who said Takbir the day he was born and I heard those who have said Takbir the day he has died and I swear by Allah those who said Takbir the day when he was born were far greater than those who have said Takbir today!” The narration mentions, there was a beautiful fragrance coming from the body but what the men of al Hajjaj did that they tied a dead cat around his waist. The fragrance was so beautiful that even over the stench of the dead cat you could smell it. Then they went to al Hajjaj and said, “al Hajjaj take his body down it has been up for days.” al Hajjaj said, “I swear by Allah I will not take it down until Asmaa’ begs me.” And when they told Asmaa’ رضي الله عنها, she said, “Take me to where the body of my son is.” She made du’a for her son and said, “Isn’t it time that knight of Allah was allowed to come off his horse?” And when they told this to al Hajjaj, he felt little and brought the body down.

The Dawn of a New Power

بسمالله الرحمان الرحيم

السلام عليكم ورحمت الله و بركاته

الحمد الله

In the time of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله تعالى عنه, over a 100,000 Persians gathered to attack the Muslims and ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه wanted to be in charge of the army but ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf رضي الله تعالى عنه objected and said, “O’ Ameer ul-Mu’minin, if you are killed, we jeopardise our conquest and expansion. Send somebody else in your place!” Then they all sat and began to think. Then ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I have found a lion in his den.” It was Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas رضي الله تعالى عنه and he left with 32,000 Muslims to face the superpower of that day. And they camped in a place called Qadisiyah. Rustum, the second in charge of the Persians, sent a message to Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas رضي الله تعالى عنه and said, “Send me a man that I can speak to!” Sa’d رضي الله تعالى عنه sent a man that if this incident hadn’t not happened it is a strong possibility that we would have never heard his name. He was a Sahabi called Rabi’ ibn ‘Amr رضي الله تعالى عنه. Rabi’ رضي الله تعالى عنه was a Sahabi who had spent his entire life in bondage. He was an Abyssinian and had been a slave all his life. Rabi’ رضي الله تعالى عنه left the camp of the Muslims on a small mule and when he reached the camp of the Persians, they said, “Descend from your mule!” He رضي الله تعالى عنه replied, “You requested me to come; now you will accept my conditions. I will not descend!” And the narrations mention that the tent of the Persians was embellished like never before. It had a silk lining all the way through and they had pillows that had silk and gold linings upon it. Rabi’ was riding a small mule, he was wearing tatty clothes that had patches in them and the sheath of his sword was made out of cloth. When he entered into the court of Rustum, who was sitting on a huge bed and had a crown upon his head, Rustum’s cronies, when they saw Rabi’ رضي الله تعالى عنه, they started to laugh. When Rabi’ رضي الله تعالى عنه reached the bed of Rustum, he got off his mount and struck one the pillows with his sword and then tied his mule. The Persians had placed a huge pillow for him to sit on but struck that with his spear and removed and then sat on the floor. Then Rustum said, “Why did you that for?” Rabi’ رضي الله تعالى عنه, “I do not wish to sit on the Dunya that you present me. I prefer to sit on the floor.” Rustum asked, “What brought you people here?” Rabi رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “Allah sent us to remove whoever He wishes from the servitude on man to the servitude of the Lord of man and from the unjust nature of other religions to the justice of Islam and from the tight confinement of this Dunya to the vast life of the Hereafter.” Then he continued, “If you accept what we have brought, then we will go back but if you refuse then we will fight you till we reach the promise of Allah.” Rustum then said, “You say that if we refuse, then you will fight us till the promise of Allah, tell me what’s this promise?” Rabi رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “The promise of Allah is Jannah for those who die fighting and victory for those who remain behind.” Then Rustum asked, “Tell me, are you their leader?” Rabi رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “No, I am not their leader. I am the lowest from amongst them but the believers are like one body the high assist the low and the low assist the high.” Later on, Rustum went back to his people and had a counsel with them and said, “Have you ever seen a man who is more articulate and more confident than him?” Rustum saw a dream that an Angel took the weapons from his hand and gave it to the Muslims; therefore he wanted to make a deal with them so the Muslims won’t fight but his people talked him into fighting. Then the battle raged and went on for five days. And on the fifth day, Rustum was killed and his army started fleeing and Muslims followed them. After this battle, Sa’d رضي الله تعالى عنه walked into the white palace bare feet and remembered the prophecy of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and gave the Adhan. When he began to give the Adhan, the fire which the zoroastrians had lit for 1200 years went out. After giving the Adhan, all the jewellery the Persians had, was sent to back to ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه. When the jewellery reached Madinah , ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه asked, “Where is Suraqa?” When Suraqa رضي الله تعالى عنه came, ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه took the bangles of the Kisra and placed it upon the arms of Suraqa رضي الله تعالى عنه and then the crown and placed on his head and said, “Do you remember when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘O’ Suraqa, how will it be when a day will come and you will be wearing the bangles of Kisra’” Then he said, “Go through the streets of Madinah, hold your hands up high so everyone can see the prophecy of the Messenger of Allah has come to pass.” Suraqa رضي الله تعالى عنه did exactly that. ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه then said, “All praise be to Allah who removed the crown from the King and placed it on the head of a Bedouin Arab.”

Martyrdom of ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan رضي الله عنه

بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم

السلام عليكم ورحمت الله و بركاته

الحمد الله

The Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid in a very remarkable hadith, “Fitnah is asleep and may the curse of Allah سبحانه و تعالى be upon that person who wakes it up.”

Imam Bukhari رحمه الله narrates, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله تعالى عنه, who was addressing the Sahabah رضي الله تعالى عنه, asked them, “Who is the most knowledgeable from amongst you regarding the fitan?” Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه jumped up and said, “Me O’ Ameer ul-Mu’minin!” And then he began to mention certain fitnas. Umar bin al-Khattab رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “It’s not these fitan I would like to know about but the Fitnah Ta muju ka maujul bahr! Which the waves would be like the waves of the ocean.” Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه asked, “Why do you want to know about these fitan Ya Ameer ul-Mu’minin? Between you and that Fitnah is a closed door.” And ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه asked, “Will that door will be opened or broken?” And Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه replied, “It will be broken.” And then ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه replied, “Then it will not be closed till the Day of Judgement!” Abu Wail رضي الله تعالى عنه, the narrator, mentions we asked Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه, “Did ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab knew who the door was?” And Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I swear by Allah ‘Umar knew who that door was like he knew the night preceded the day.” Then Abu Wail رضي الله تعالى عنه said that he asked, “Masruq رضي الله تعالى عنه to ask Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه who was that door?” And Masruq رضي الله تعالى عنه asked, “Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه that who was that door?” And Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه replied, “That door was ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله تعالى عنه

The first major Fitnah that took place in the Muslim Ummah was the barbaric murder of ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan رضي الله تعالى عنه.

Virtues of ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan رضي الله تعالى عنه:

1)‘Uthman bin ‘Affan رضي الله تعالى عنه married two of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم’s daughters

Shah WaliuLlah رحمه الله mentions that there was no man in the history of humanity other than ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه had two daughters of any Prophet عليهم سلام in his wedlock.

After the second daughter of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمpassed away, he صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, “If I had 40 daughters each one of them passed away, I would give the next.”

2) He was the man who bought the well of Ruma.
3) He was the man who bought the portion of the Masjid Nabawi صلى الله عليه وسلمand extended it
4) He was the man when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaw his generosity said, “Whatever you do after this day, nothing will harm you!”

On the battle of Tabuk, Abu Bakr رضي الله تعالى عنه gave everything he had to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. He صلى الله عليه وسلمthen asked him, “What have you left for your family?” He رضي الله تعالى عنه replied, “Allah سبحانه و تعالى and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم” When all the Sahabah had given what they could, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, “Who can give more?” Nobody stood up and ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه stood up and said, “O’ Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلمI give 300 camels laden with saddles!” And then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, “Who else can give more?” Nobody else stood up and ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه stood up and said, “O’ Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلمI give another 300 camels laden with saddles!” And then again the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, “Who else can give more?” Nobody else stood up and ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه stood up and said, “O’ Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلمI give another 300 camels laden with saddles!” then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, “Who will give more?” Nobody stood up and ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه stood up and went home and brought sack full of coins which were equivalent to the 900 camels he had given laden with saddles. Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمhad rubbed these dirhams in his fingers and said, “O’ ‘Uthman! After today whatever you do, nothing will harm you!”

5) He was the man regarding the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, “This is a man even the Angels have hayaa’ from.”

Once the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was sitting, a portion of his leg was exposed and Abu Bakr رضي الله تعالى عنه came in and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم didn’t move. Then ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه came but the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم didn’t move. And when ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه came, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم quickly put his clothes straight. Then ‘Aishah رضي الله تعالى عنه asked, “When my father came in O’ Messenger of Allah you didn’t change your position! ‘Umar came in, you didn’t change your position! But when ‘Uthman came in, you changed your position.” The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Should I not have hayaa’ from the man even the Angels have hayaa’ from.”

6) He was the man regarding whom the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, “Each and every Prophet will have a companion in Jannah and my companion will be ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan.”

Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه mentions, “The first Fitnah to afflict this Ummah was the murder of ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan and the final Fitnah will be the emergence of Dajjal.”

Background of this Fitnah:

There was a jew called ‘AbduLlah ibn Sabah who embraced Islam with the Intention of hurting Islam and he would go around to different places and first he went to Madinah and he said that the Khilafah belongs to ‘Ali رضي الله تعالى عنه which was usurped by Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. First person who stood against him was no other than ‘Ali رضي الله تعالى عنه. Ibn Sabah was booted out of Madinah. He used to things like, “If ‘Isa عليه سلام is going to come back then why not Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم going to come back although the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is greater than ‘Isa عليه سلام” When ‘AbduLlah ibn Sabah went around and managed to get a group of people, Mu’aawiyah رضي الله تعالى عنه became very concerned and he knew that this man was getting momentum. He went to ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه and said, “O’ Ameer ul-Mu’minin! Come to Sham and I will protect you.” (Because all the armies were at the frontier no army was at Makkah or Madinah.) ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “O Mu’aawiyah! You want to take me away from where the body of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is lies? I swear by Allah سبحانه و تعالى I will never leave Madinah until my head is removed.” Then Mu’aawiyah رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “Let me send you an army that will protect you” ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I do not want to incur inconvenience by bring a large army to Madinah.” And then Mu’aawiyah رضي الله تعالى عنه became angry and said, “O Ameer ul-Mu’minin! Don’t you know that these people will attack you and try to kill you?” ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه replied, “HasbunAllahu Ni’mal Wakeel!” And Mu’aawiyah رضي الله تعالى عنه went back to Sham since he was the Governor. Shortly after this, when it was the time for Hajj, the group of rebels wore the Ihram pretending that they were performing Hajj. And they said that they were going to the Rauwda of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم but their intention was something else. The news reached ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه and he ascended the pulpit and said, “The news has reached me that some rebels are marching in Madinah.” The Sahabah رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “Don’t worry O’ Ameer ul-Mu’minin when they’ll come, we’ll sort them out.” Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه, said, “No, when they will come we will explain the truth to them if they want to accept then الحمد الله ” Upon the occasion ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه was in Masjid and these rebels came in and they stood up and began to object from ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. The first of their objections was, “O’ ‘Uthman! You are a mubtadi’! Because when you came for Hajj and when you came to Mina instead of performing 2 Raka’at, you performed 4 Raka’at although we saw the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمperform 2 Raka’at, Abu Bakr perform 2 Raka’at we saw ‘Umar perform 2 Raka’at.” And ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I have a wife who lives in Mina so I am not a traveller I am a resident so therefore I prayed 4 Raka’at” And he turned around to the Sahabah and said, “Isn’t it so?” They said, “Allahu Man’aam!” “Indeed it is so!” They (the rebels) said, “O’ ‘Uthman! You took the land around Madinah for yourself and for your camels to graze and you used the property of the believers for you personal use!” And ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه replied, “Before I became the Khalifah, there was no ‘Arab who had more camels than I had and today I only have two camels.” And he turned around to the Sahabah and said, “Isn’t it so?” They said, “Allahu Man’aam!” “Indeed it is so!” They then said, “O’ ‘Uthman! The Qur’an was in many dialects and you brought it into one.” And ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه replied, “Allah سبحانه و تعالى is one and His book is one.” And he turned to the Sahabah and said, “Isn’t it so?” They said, “Allahu Man’aam!” “Indeed it is so!” They said, “O’ ‘Uthman! You gave priority to young over the old. You made young the leaders over the old.” And ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه turned around and said, “Didn’t Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم made Usamah bin Zayd the leader over an army in which Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman and many others eminent Sahabah were?” And he turned around to the Sahabah and said, “Wasn’t it so?” They said, “Allahu Man’aam!” “Indeed it is so!” They said, “’Uthman! You loved your family.” And ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “Indeed I love my family but I swear by Allah سبحانه و تعالى I have never fed any of them from the wealth of the believers. I have never fed myself since I have become the Khalifah from the wealth of the believers!” And he turned around to the Sahabah and said, “Isn’t it so?” They said, “Allahu Man’aam!” “Indeed it is so!” When they were going back, they forged a letter from ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه to the governor of Egypt that, “When these people reach Egypt, kill them.” And they pretended that they intercepted this letter. Then they forged another letter from ‘Ali رضي الله تعالى عنه. When the rebels read this letter, they thought that it was from ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan رضي الله تعالى عنه although it was forged by their (Rebels’) leaders. And they went back and the first person they went to was ‘Ali رضي الله تعالى عنه and they said, “O’ ‘Ali! You sent us this letter.” ‘Ali رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I sent you no letter!” By now they had convinced themselves since their hearts were blackened with hate. And then they besieged the house of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. The first thing they did was that they stopped the water from coming to the house of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. And the wife of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Umm Habibah came on a mule and what the rebels did was that they cut the ropes, the water which she had fell and they made the mule run as a consequence the wife of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم fell of the mule. Seeing this, ‘Ammar ibn Yasir رضي الله تعالى عنه came out and said, “O’ rebels! Are you stopping water from that very person who bought the well of Ruma?” When they besieged his house, ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه used to come out and used to say, “You stopped water from me although there was a time I gave water to each one of you?” They stopped him from praying Salah in the Masjid and ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه would come out and say, “You stopped me from praying Salah in the Masjid that I bought and extended?” One after the other, the Sahabah رضي الله تعالى عنه would come, the likes of Hasan, Hussain, ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Umar, Abu Hurairah, ‘AbduLlah ibn Salam, ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله تعالى عنه they would all come and say, “O’ Ameer ul-Mu’minin! Let us fight on your behalf! For we are those people who were smaller in number but have defeated far greater armies than this!” “O’ Ameer ul-Mu’minin! Let us become Ansar-ul-Llah again! For once we fought for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم now let us fight for you!” And ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه would say, “Whoever believes that I am the Ameer, they should go back for I give nobody permission to fight on my behalf.” What the Sahabah would do is that they would go to the outskirts of his house and take out their swords and they would protect ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. The rebels would taunt them (the Sahabah). One rebel came to ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه and said, “O’ ‘AbduLlah! What kind of man are you protecting? Are you protecting this man? Isn’t it true the ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه didn’t participate in the Battle of Badr? Isn’t it true that he ran away on the Battle of Uhud? Isn’t it true that he give Ba’yah to Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم under the tree?” And on each occasion ‘‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “Yes, it’s true!” So then the rebel said, “Allahu Akbar! I told you he’s wrong type of person! Why are you protecting such a man?” ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “Come closer my brother, let me explain something to you. The reason he did not attend the Battle of Badr was he was married to the daughter of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Ruqayyah رضي الله تعالى عنه she became very ill and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘O’ ‘Uthman! Remain behind and look after Ruqayyah for we will regard you as a one of the participants of the Battle of Badr.’ And the day we won the Battle of Badr, we returned to Madinah and ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه was burying the daughter of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. And as for the Battle of Uhud, he wasn’t the only one who left the field there were many Sahabah when the news spread that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had passed away only handful of Sahabah رضي الله تعالى عنه who were around the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and Allah سبحانه و تعالى says regarding these people, ‘Allah has forgiven these people.’ If Allah سبحانه و تعالى has forgiven him aren’t you ready to forgive him? And as far as the Ba’yah-tu-Ridwan, the reason the Ba’yah was given for ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه.” (When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم sent ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه as an ambassador, a rumour spread that he had been killed. So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم told Ba’yah from 1400 Sahabah with whom Allah سبحانه و تعالى is pleased to take revenge on behalf of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه . Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took one hand and he said, “The other hand was the hand of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه ” And ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Umar said, “We became envious that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used his own hand to define the hand of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه .”)

It is said regarding ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله تعالى عنه, he had over 40 wounds protecting ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. It is said regarding Hasan رضي الله تعالى عنه, the beloved grandson of Prophet

Why won’t ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه allow these people to protect him? The reason is mentioned by Imam Ahmad رحمه الله in Musnad, ‘Aishah رضي الله تعالى عنه mentions, “Upon occasion the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘O ‘Aishah! Call me a certain Sahabi.’ And I thought it was Abu Bakr, so I said, ‘My father!’ He صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘’Umar.’ He صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Your cousin ‘Ali’ He صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, ‘No.’ I said, ‘’Uthman’ Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, ‘Yes, call me ‘Uthman.’ And we sent for ‘Uthman. And when ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه came, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمembraced him. I was watching from a distance and the face of ‘Uthman began to change.” And the day his house was besieged, we said, ‘O’ Ameer ul-Mu’minun! Shall we not fight on your behalf?’ And he said, “No, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمtook a covenant from me and I would do sabr on the covenant of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم” The house of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه, was besieged for 40 days. For 40 days, he would fast during the day and would pray Salah during the night. Upon the 40th night, ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه saw in a dream Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمand the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, “O’ ‘Uthman! The fast that you have been keeping for 40 days tomorrow you open the fast with us.” And when ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه woke up, his wife, Anaila رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “He was in an elated mood, he was in a happy mood.” And the first thing he did, he went out and spoke to the guard saying, ‘I ask you for the sake of Allah do not shed anybody’s blood on my behalf.’ Then he took the Qur’an and began to recite the Qur’an. One of the rebel jumped over and this rebel grabbed the beard of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه and he calmly said, “Leave my beard, because indeed your father used to honour this beard.” The rebel’s hand left because he remembered not only how his father honoured but how the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمand how everybody else honoured ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. And when he heard these words, he left. Then two other Egyptians jumped over the wall and they knew no virtues of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. And when ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه saw them coming, the first thing he did was he tied his Izaar to end the of his time, his ‘Awrah wouldn’t be uncovered. Then these rebels came and struck ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه on his head with a piece of iron. And the blood began to pour from the head of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. The first place where the blood fell was the Qur’an and on the verse, “Sa Yak FikahumulLah” “Allah will suffice you against them.” One of them was about to hit him with a sword, ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه placed his hand up high to protect himself and he cut the hand of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. And ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I swear by Allah the hand that you have just cut off, it was the first hand to write the Qur’an.” Then he recited the ayah, “Al-Ladhina Qala Lahumu An-Naasu ‘Inna An-Naasa Qad Jama`a Lakum Fukhshawhum Fazadahum ‘Imaanauw Wa Qalu HasbunaAllahu Wa Ni`ma Al-Wakeelu” “Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, “Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them.” But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: “Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).” Then they placed the sword under the stomach of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه and his wife came running, she placed her hand between the sword and they cut her finger off. And then they pierced the stomach of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه and after ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه, who was an 82-year old man had passed away, one of the rebels jumped onto the chest of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه and he stabbed him 6 times! He (the rebel) said later, “I stabbed him three times for the sake of Allah and three times for myself.” Then they dragged the body of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه to the rubbish bin and his wife Anaila رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “His face with was covered with blood and I went inside the house to get something to cover his face with but I did not because they had burnt everything. But then I took of my scarf and placed it on his head. And all of a sudden I saw a person running in and he came hurriedly and I thought this man would assist us. But he removed the cloth from the man who had passed away, and slapped him on his face.” And that rebel said, “No man can bury ‘Uthman!” The wife of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, Umm Habibah رضي الله تعالى عنه, she climbed onto the stairs of the Masjid Nabawi and said, “O’ Rebels! Know, if you do not allow us to bury ‘Uthman, then I, the wife of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, I the widow of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, I the beloved of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, I the mother of believers, will descend into the streets of Madinah with my hair uncovered and will bury ‘Uthman myself.” Ka’b ibn Malik رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I swear by Allah if Umm Habibah رضي الله تعالى عنه had descended in the streets of Madinah with her hair uncovered, then Allah would have rained rocks from the sky!” When the rebels heard the threats of the wife of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, they allowed the body of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه to be buried by four people: Hasan رضي الله تعالى عنه, Hussain رضي الله تعالى عنه, ‘Ali رضي الله تعالى عنه and Muhammad ibn Talh رضي الله تعالى عنه. When they were taking the body of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه, the rebels began to throw rocks at the body of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه. They (the four men allowed) wanted to bury him in Jannat al-Baqi, but the rebels insisted that he be buried outside Jannat al-Baqi. And a famous Tabi’in ‘Amrata bin ‘Arfa رضي الله تعالى عنه mentions, “When me and ‘Aishah came back from Hajj, we saw the Qur’an upon which the blood of ‘Uthman had fallen, on the ayah, ‘Fa Sa Yak FikahumulLah’” She swore by Allah سبحانه و تعالى that each of these rebels died disastrous death.

Once ‘AbduLlah ibn Mubarak رحمه الله was doing tawaf around the Ka’bah, he saw a person holding onto the Ka’bah saying, “O’ Allah! Forgive me! O’ Allah! Forgive me! But I swear that you will not forgive me.” And ‘AbduLlah ibn Mubarak was astonished by this person’s du’a and he said, “Who are you?” And the man replied, “I am that person who struck the head of ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه with the iron rod and see how Allah سبحانه و تعالى has disfigured my hand!” And ‘AbduLlah ibn Mubarak kicked him and said, “Go away, for you are the worst of people!”

Abu Musa al Ash’ari mentions, “I came back from Sham and I saw a group of people outside the Masjid around a person whose hands were disfigured and whose feet were disfigured. And when I came close to this man he said, ‘O’ Abu Musa al Ash’ari! Go away!’ I thought how did this man know me? And he said, ‘You may not know me but I know you. I am the man who pierced ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه with the knife and ‘Uthman cursed me and look at my hands and look at my feet.’”

Hasan رضي الله تعالى عنه mentions, “I saw my grandfather Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمin a dream. And he was standing by the ‘Arsh of Allah سبحانه و تعالى and he looked worried, this was the first time that I saw him in a dream looking worried. And then Abu Bakr رضي الله تعالى عنه came behind him and he placed his hand on the shoulder of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمand ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه came behind him and he placed his hand on the shoulder of Abu Bakr رضي الله تعالى عنه and this was the day ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه passed away. Shortly after this, ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه came and his face was full of blood and his head was in his hands and he said, ‘O’ Messenger of Allah! Ask these people for what sin they butchered me like a cow? When ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه said this, the ‘Arsh of Allah سبحانه و تعالى began to shake! And two streams of blood came down from the ‘Arsh of Allah سبحانه و تعالى and voice came out from the Unseen, ‘Until Today, no believer has taken the life of a believer. After today, until the Day of Judgement, believers will take the life of other believers!’

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, “The entire Dunya is little in the eyes of Allah سبحانه و تعالى in comparison to the blood of a believer.”

Abu Hurairah رضي الله تعالى عنه mentions, “Upon an occasion I was with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمand he صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, ‘O’ Abu Hurairah! Do you have anything to eat?’ I said, ‘O’ Messenger of Allah! I have only one date.’ The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, ‘Bring that date.’ That date was in a pouch. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, then supplicated upon that and said, ‘O’ Abu Hurairah whenever you want to eat, eat from this date.’ Then he صلى الله عليه وسلمcalled ten people and they ate to their full until they dissociated. Then he called another ten people and they ate to their full until they dissociated. Then he صلى الله عليه وسلمcalled another ten people and they ate to their full until they dissociated. Throughout the life of Prophet I ate from that pouch. Throughout the whole Khilafah of Abu Bakr رضي الله تعالى عنه I ate from that one date, from that pouch and it didn’t finish. Throughout the whole Khilafah of ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه I ate from that pouch. The day ‘Uthman رضي الله تعالى عنه passed away, that was the day when the dates finished from that pouch.”

Hudhaifah رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “The first Fitnah to afflict this Ummah was the murder of ‘Uthman and the final will be the emergence of Dajjal. Whoever is happy with murder of ‘Uthman, if he finds Dajjal, he will follow him. If he dies before Dajjal, he will believe in him.

What beautiful ride I have on my shoulder”

2) Upon an occasion the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was giving the Juma’ah Khutbah, Hasan and Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه entered the Masjid and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم descended from the pulpit and he صلى الله عليه وسلم picked Hasan and Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه up and then he صلى الله عليه وسلم ascended the pulpit and said, “Indeed Allah speaks the truth, ‘Innama Auladukum Wa Amwalukum Fitnah’”

3) The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was once walking though the streets of Madinah and he صلى الله عليه وسلم saw Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه playing with the children. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم started to run after him رضي الله تعالى عنه . And Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه would run this way and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would run after him رضي الله تعالى عنه until finally he صلى الله عليه وسلم caught him رضي الله تعالى عنه , embraced him رضي الله تعالى عنه and kissed رضي الله تعالى عنه .

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم once lifted up the garment of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه and kissed him رضي الله تعالى عنه on his navel.

4) The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn.”

5) The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم told Hasan and Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه that, “Your houses will opposite my house in Jannah.”

The Story of the Martyrdom of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه :

When Mu’awiyah رضي الله تعالى عنه passed away, he رضي الله تعالى عنه made his son, Yazid, the caliph. Many of the people of ‘Iraq felt that Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه should have been the caliph and they began to write letters. The narration mentions that sent 12,000 letters to Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه that, “Husayn come to us and we will give bay’ah to you!” What Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه did was, he رضي الله تعالى عنه sent his cousin Muslim ibn Aqeel رضي الله تعالى عنه to see what was happening in Kufah. When Muslim ibn Aqeel رضي الله تعالى عنه leave, he رضي الله تعالى عنه left with two guides. On the way, the first one passed away and then later on, second one passed away and Muslim ibn Aqeel رضي الله تعالى عنه got a very bad feeling about this journey and he wrote a letter to Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه saying, “I got a very bad feeling about this journey.” Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه told him to carry on. He رضي الله تعالى عنه reached Kufah and within a few days, 32,000 people gave bay’ah on the hands of Muslim ibn Aqeel رضي الله تعالى عنه for Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه . And Muslim ibn Aqeel رضي الله تعالى عنه wrote a letter to Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه , who was in Makkah, “Husayn! Come to Kufah for the people’s hearts’ are with you!” At that time the Governor of Kufah was Nu’man ibn Bashir رضي الله تعالى عنه who was a very pious person and the people said, “O’ Nu’man! What are you doing? Why don’t you sort Muslim out?” And Nu’man ibn Bashir رضي الله تعالى عنه didn’t want to be tested through the family of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and he رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I rather be weak for the truth than be strong for falsehood!” And when Yazid saw that Nu’man ibn Bashir رضي الله تعالى عنه had turned a blind eye, he replaced him with a tyrant called ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad. What ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad did that he entered Kufah with his face covered and people of Kufah were already waiting for Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه and they thought it was him رضي الله تعالى عنه because ‘UbayduLlah had a small entourage with him . And the people started to say, “Assalamu ‘Alaikum O’ grandson of the Prophet!” Then ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad understood the seriousness of the situation and he went straight to the governor’ palace and then the people understood that this man wasn’t Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه but it was somebody else. And the first thing he did was, that ‘UbayduLlah sent out scouts to look for the gatherings of Muslim ibn ‘Aqeel رضي الله تعالى عنه and one of the found his gathering. What he would do was that he would sit there and would see who would come and go. Then he would report back to ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad. One of the persons who would come to the gatherings was man called Hani who was the leader of his people. So, once ‘UbayduLlah summoned him and asked, “O’ Hani! Tell me where Muslim ibn ‘Aqeel is?” He replied, “I don’t know where Muslim is. I don’t even know who Muslim is!” ‘UbayduLlah then called his slave out and then Hani understood game over and then he said, “I swear by Allah! If Muslim ibn ‘Aqeel was under my foot, I would never reveal him to you!” When Muslim ibn ‘Aqeel رضي الله تعالى عنه found out that Hani had been arrested, he marched to the Governor’s palace with 4,000 people. And ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad gathered all the leaders of the tribes and told them, “If you peel off your men then you will be my cronies!” So they went out and began to peel off their men. The narrations mention that in the morning, Muslim ibn ‘Aqeel رضي الله تعالى عنه had 4,000 men, in the afternoon he had 400 men, at Maghrib; he had 30 men and after Maghrib; he was all by himself. He was walking and hiding in the streets of Kufah and ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad’s men were looking for him until he finally came to a house and he knocked on the door. An old lady opened the door and he said, “O’ Lady! Do you have any water for the traveller?” She said, “Indeed!” She gave him some water and he رضي الله تعالى عنه the water and he sat there. The lady then said, “Why are you sitting? What’s wrong?” Then he told her, “I am Muslim ibn ‘Aqeel.” And she said, “The family of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم ?” He said, “Yes!” She was honoured and took him in and then later on her son came and she told him, “We are honoured, we have the family of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in our house!” But he was a sell out who wanted a dollar or dime and the next morning he went straight to the Governor’s Palace and said, “If you give me some money, I will tell you where Muslim ibn ‘Aqeel is?” He gave him some money and the boy told him where he was. They besieged the house and arrested Muslim ibn ‘Aqeel. When he came to the palace, ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad said, “Take him and Hani to the roof and behead them and throw their heads over the palace hall so the people will know whoever rebels against the Khalifah, this will be his outcome!” This happened on the day of ‘Arafah. Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه left Makkah one or two days before this. When the eminent Sahabah found out the he was going, they tried to convince him not go. When ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله تعالى عنه found out, he said, “Husayn! Where are you going?” He continued, “Don’t you know what they did to your father? Don’t you know what the people of ‘Iraq did to your brother? So where you going?” Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه insisted that he wanted to go but ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I swear by Allah! If I had the power I’ll tie a rope upon your neck and keep you in Makkah!” When ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Umar found out, he travelled for three days to catch up with Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه and he said to him, “Husayn! Where are you going?” And Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “Look at the letters they sent to me, they want to give Bay’ah to me!” Then ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه then said, “This can never happen because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said that he is from you and you are from him and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was given the option of the Dunya and the Aakhirah and he chose the Aakhirah so you can never attain the Dunya!” And Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه insisted upon going and then ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “Show me the place where the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to kiss you” He رضي الله تعالى عنه lifted his garment and ‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Umar kissed him on the very spot where the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to kiss him. And then Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه advanced and met a man called Farazdaq, who was a very famous poet. Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه asked him about the situation of the people of Kufah, Farazdaq replied, “Their hearts are with you but their souls are with Bani Umayyah!” And Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه went on and started to say, “Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar!” They said, “O’ Husayn! What’s wrong?” He رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “I have seen an Angel as a rider and he has told me that the army is coming and death awaits you!” They said, “What do you see? What do you see?” Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “Upon the second time I have seen the Decree of Allah سبحانه و تعالى !” And when he went on, ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad had set up an army of 1,000 men under Hurr ibn Yazid. When Hurr ibn Yazid confronted Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه , he said, “O’ Husayn! Don’t make Allah test me through the family of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم !” And Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه carried on with his caravan and Hurr ibn Yazid began to follow him with his army and then Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “May your mother lose you!” Hurr ibn Yazid said, “O’ Husayn! I swear by Allah if anyone other than you would have said this to me, I would have taken revenge from him and his mother but what can I say. Your mother is the leader of all the women of this Dunya and all the women of the Aakhirah.” ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad sent reinforcements of 4,000 men under ‘Umar ibn Sa’d, another 4,000 men under Shimar, another 1,000 men under Husayn ibn Numayr and another 1,000 men under Muhammad ibn Ash’ath. Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه saw the seriousness of the situation, 11,000 men and he only had 72 people with him. Then he turned to ‘Umar ibn Sa’d and said, “O’ ‘Umar! Give me one of three options either allow me to fight for the rest of my life in the path of Allah or allow me to speak to Yazid or allow me to go to Makkah!” And ‘Umar ibn Sa’d a letter to ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad and he agreed but Shimar was sitting there and said, “You can not agree! For you if you agree on one o his three conditions, he wins! Tell him that he must surrender with any conditions and his fate will lie in our hands!” Then they sent a letter to ‘Umar ibn Sa’d that he must surrender without any conditions. And when ‘Umar ibn Sa’d read the letter to Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه , he said, “O’ ‘Umar I swear by Allah! If a kafir had asked me of one of these conditions I would have accepted them, don’t you know who I am? The son of ‘Ali! The son Fatimah! The grandson of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم who said, ‘Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn. Whoever hurt Husayn has hurt me.’ What will you on the Day of Judgement when you will come to my grandfather and you will want him to intercede on your behalf and you have done this to me?” And Hurr ibn Yazid was listening to this and he walked to Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه and said, “Husayn! From now I am with you.” He turned to the people of Kufah and said, “What kind of people are you? You right him letter upon letter and when he comes, you deceive him and you deprive him of water! And nearby is the river from which the dogs and pigs drink water, from which the Jews and Christians drink water and you have stopped it from the family of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم ?” And then came the 3rd day and from this day Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه came out and he drew his sword and he sat down and fell asleep and saw a dream. The only thing which woke him up was sister Zaynab رضي الله تعالى عنه , she came out running and screaming because the enemies were advancing. Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه said to his brother, “Tell them to give us one more day, that’s all what we want to think over things!” And ‘Abbas رضي الله تعالى عنه spoke to them and they gave them one more day. Upon that night, Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه gathered all his men and he said, “O’ People! Know that the only man they want is me, so why don’t you go back?” They said, “O’ Husayn! There is no life for us after you.” And then he turned to the family of Muslim ibn ‘Aqeel رضي الله تعالى عنه and said, “O’ Muslim! Your family has given the sacrifice, why don’t you go back?” They said, “O’ Husayn! What will the people say that you left your master because you wanted to live in this Dunya? I swear by Allah! For this can never happen, we will die with you!” And then Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه said, “The reason I took one more night was not because I will join with the falsehood but because I saw dream in which I saw my grandfather the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم who said, ‘O’ Husayn! Get ready to come to me!’ And the reason I took one more night is that I wanted to stand in front of my Lord so I could cry, I wanted to repent to my Lord this is the only reason why I took one more night otherwise, had it been that we would join with the falsehood, the family of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم can not join falsehood” Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه spent the entire night crying in front of his Lord and was reciting this poetry:

أوفى لك يا دهر من خليلى
كم لك بى أشرقى وأصيلى
من صاحب أو طالب كفيلى
والدهر لا يترك بالبديلى
أنما الأمر الى جليلى
وكل هيئ مثلك سبيلى

Uffi Laka Yaddakhru Min Khalilee,

Kam Laka Bi Ishraqi Wa Asilee,

Min Sahibin Au Talibin Kafilee,

Wadahru La Yatru Bil Badilee,

Inna Mal Amru Ilaj Jalilee,

Wa Kullu Hai’in Miththluku Sabilee

“O’ Time! What an awful friend you are!

For all those who have pursued you, you have killed them by day and night

And you have always attained your target,

But all matters will go back to the Sublime One,

And every person who is living will walk my path.”

And Zaynab رضي الله تعالى عنه listened to this and she began to weep and he said, “O’ Zaynab! Don’t let the shaytaan get the better of you for I swear by Allah! That my mother was better than me and she died, my brother was better than me and he died, my father was better than me and he died and my grandfather was better than me and they all died. A time will come when me and you will leave this Dunya so don’t allow the shaytaan to get the better of you.” The next day was Friday, Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه came out with his men, the Kufans also came out and the conventional warfare at that time was that people had duels, one-to-one. Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه ’s men started slaughter them one-by-one and the Kufans thought if things carried out this way they won’t have any men left. Then 3,000 Kufans attacked the men of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه and the first man to fall was Muslim ibn Awsij and Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه moved up to him and said, “Muslim, glad tidings unto you for you are the first one to fall for the family of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم !” And then Habib ibn Musahhib moved forward and he said, “Glad tidings be unto you Muslim for you are guaranteed Jannah for falling for the family of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم !” Then Muslim turned to Habib and said, “O’ Habib! Don’t die after Husayn, die before Husayn, die protecting Husayn!” Then, one-by-one all those who were around Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه fell. Hurr ibn Yazid, Habib ibn at-Tahir, Habib ibn ‘AbduLlah, who said to Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه , “Husayn! I swear by Allah if I had a thousand lives I would give each one for you but the thing is that I only have one life!” All of them fell until the family of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه was left. And the first person to come out of the family of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه was ‘Ali Akbar رضي الله تعالى عنه , the eldest son of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه who was 19 years old at that time and came out and fought like a lion until they cut of his hand and they struck him and when he was breathing his last, Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه took him in his arms and said, “O’ my son! On the Judgement your grandfather will bear witness to your shahadah!” Then the cousins of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم moved forward, four of them came until they were martyred. Then Qasim, the son of Hasan رضي الله تعالى عنه , came forward. He was a very beautiful young man and he fought until they struck him over the head, when they did so, he called out, “O’ my uncle!” Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه came forward and he took him in his arms and said, “O’ my son, today your uncle is so incapacitated that he can not reply to your call because his enemies are many and strengths are few! But I swear by Allah that after this day you will not need to call upon anybody!” Then one-by-one, the family of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه got martyred until there were only two people left: ‘Abbas رضي الله تعالى عنه and Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه . Then they martyred ‘Abbas رضي الله تعالى عنه . And Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه fought bravely for 3 days and he tasted a sip of water until finally he retreated into his camp and he had a young child called ‘AbduLlah and he knew his time was up. So, he took his son in his arms and began to kiss him and embrace him. Suddenly, one of the Kufans shot an arrow which hit the neck of ‘AbduLlah and Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه put ‘AbduLlah to the floor, lifted his hands up to the sky and said, “O’ Allah! Give me Sabr upon your Decree! O’ Allah! Give me Sabr upon your Decree! O’ Allah! Give me Sabr upon your Decree!” Then Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه saw a river and approached it so he could drink some water and one of the Kufans shot an arrow which hit Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه who fell to the floor. The Kufans surrounded him and he said, “Give me some water for what will you do on the Day of Judgement when you will come to my grandfather and you will ask for water? What will you do on the Day of Judgement?” And the narrations mention, that the scene was so touching that many of the Kufans took a step back. But, Shimar said, “What you waiting for? Finish him off!” All the womenfolk of the family of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه were watching, his wife, his sisters and his daughters. They stepped upon on him and they struck him 60 times! But it didn’t finish there because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Allah has a certain station for people often they can not attain this station through their own deeds so Allah puts them through trials and tribulations.” And one of the Kufans got hold of his neck and other one removed his head from the body. Then they took the womenfolk of the family of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه as captives. When Zaynab رضي الله تعالى عنه walked pass the bodies and they beheaded every single one and she started saying, “O’ my grandfather! O’ my grandfather! May the Angels of the sky send salutations upon you! This is Husayn, lying in the battlefield and today his shroud and clothes are blood and his limbs have been cut (What they did was that after killing Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه , they made horses trample his body!). O’ my grandfather! Today, your daughters have become captives and your progeny has been killed!” Even when some of the soldiers heard this, they lost control and began to cry and Allah سبحانه و تعالى didn’t even give these people Tawfeeq to bury Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه until Bani Asad came and buried his body. When the Kufans found out, they sent water over the places where the bodies were and then one of the Bedouins from Bani Asad came to Karbala. But Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه wasn’t the first person to see Karbala. Imam Ahmad (RahimahuLlah) has narrated in his Musnad that upon occasion Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was sitting with the Angel of rain and Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه was a small child sitting with Umm Salma رضي الله تعالى عنه and he wanted go to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم . He ran into the room and began to jump on the shoulders of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and the Angel said, “O’ Messenger of Allah! Do you love Husayn?” The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Indeed I love Husayn!” Then he said, “People from your Ummah will kill Husayn and if you wish I will show you the place where they will kill him.” The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Yes, show me!” And he struck his hand and the land of Karbala opened up and he bought some red soil and Umm Salma mentions, “I used to tie this soil in my scarf” When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saw this land, he said, “From this land I smell Karb (which means difficulty and pain) and Bala’ (thousand tribulations)” Then the Bedouin came and he began to smell the soil of Karbala. He came to the place where he smelled the fragrance which he hadn’t smelled before and he said that this was the place where Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه was buried. And then they took the head of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه to ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad. When he saw the head of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه , even he was amazed by the beauty and said, “What Beauty!” Anas ibn Malik رضي الله تعالى عنه was standing there and was saying, “There was no man who resembled the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم more than Husayn” When the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم died, the Sahabah used to miss the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم . So, they used to go the house of ‘Ali رضي الله تعالى عنه and used to see Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه and he would remind them of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم . Then ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad took a cane and hit the lips of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه and Abu Darda’ رضي الله تعالى عنه was standing there and said, “Remove that cane for I swear by Allah I saw the lips of the Prophet :saws: upon those lips!” Then they took the head to Yazid who sent the head with the womenfolk of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه to Madinah where his head was buried with Fatimah رضي الله تعالى عنه in some narrations. This took place in 61H and in 66H the Governor of Kufah became a person called Mukhtar ibn ‘AbdiLlah who rounded all those people who killed Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه and he executed them one-by-one. The narrations mention that dogs dragged the body of Shimar through streets of Kufah. Regarding ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad, Imam at-Tirmidhi narrates in his Jami’, when they beheaded him and they brought his head to the Masjid, they saw a huge serpent come out and serpent went into the head of ‘UbayduLlah ibn Ziyad and remained there for a while and then it came out and disappeared. Imam ad-Dhahabi narrates in his book, Siyar a`lam al-nubala’, that one of the traveller’s mentioned, “I went to Kufah and I stayed at a person’s house and I said to him, ‘All those who killed Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه, died a treacherous death!’ He said, ‘You are lying! For I am from amongst them and nothing happened to me. Look I am fine!’ Even so, he went straight to the lantern, his fingers got stuck to the lantern and tried to blow the lantern out, and his beard caught on fire. He managed to find some water and he jumped into the water but still burnt like a charcoal!”

‘AbduLlah ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله تعالى عنه mentioned, “The day Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه passed away, I saw the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in a dream and he had unkempt hair, he had dirty clothes and he had a glass full of blood and I asked him, ‘O’ Messenger of Allah! Where have you come from?’ He صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘I have come from witnessing the martyrdom of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه and on the Day of Judgement, I will give witness of the Martyrdom of Husayn رضي الله تعالى عنه!’”
