It would be no exaggeration to say that the Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen ‘Umar bin al-Khattab رضي الله عنه was so much feared by the Muslims that once he heard a group of men talking about a certain lady. So ‘Umar رضي الله عنه wanted to know about this Muslimah and thus he summoned for her. This Muslimah was pregnant and when she saw ‘Umar رضي الله عنه and he saw her, she had a miscarriage!

Once ‘Umar رضي الله عنه was getting his hair cut suddenly he coughed and because of this the barber urinated on himself because of the fear. The other Sahabah رضي الله عنهم got to know about this incident and ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan, ‘Ali bin Abi Talib, ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf, Az-Zubayr bin ‘Awwam رضي الله عنهم gathered to discuss this issue about the immense fear of ‘Umar رضي الله عنه in the hearts of the believers. They came up with the idea that they will choose from themselves a person who would go speak to ‘Umar رضي الله عنه about it and the boldest of them was ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf رضي الله عنه thus he was sent. He went to ‘Umar رضي الله عنه and told him how much the believers feared him. ‘Umar رضي الله عنه responded, “O’ ‘Abdur Rahman, sometimes I feel that I am too strict so I soften whilst sometimes I feel that I am too lenient so I become strict I don’t know what will happen of me when I meet Allah سبحانه و تعالى!” Hearing this, ‘Abdur Rahman رضي الله عنه started weeping and he left saying, “Woe to you O’ Ummah of Muhammad, what will happen to you when you (‘Umar) will leave!”

Once ‘Umar رضي الله عنه was walking down the road in Madinah and a woman came to ‘Umar رضي الله عنه and she stopped him and said, “O’ ‘Umar, I remember one day when you would be called ‘Umayr (when he was young and ‘Umayr means small ‘Umar) and you would be carrying a stick with you terrorising the kids then after that you were called ‘Umar and then the days passed and you are called Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen so fear Allah. And fear Allah with your people and remember the Day of Judgement.” She went on and on giving nasihah and ‘Umar رضي الله عنه just stood there listening to her without any interruption. There was a man with ‘Umar who said, “Stop speaking like that to Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen!” ‘Umar رضي الله عنه said, “You stop! If this woman would continue talking I would continue listening and I would only leave her to perform Salah and come back. Why shouldn’t I listen to a woman whom Allah listened to her complaints from above seven Heavens?” This was Khawlah رضي الله عنها who went to complain to Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم about her husband for whom revealed ayaat in Surat al-Mujadilah.

Once the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلمhad cupping done and then asked ‘AbduLlah ibn Zubayr رضي الله عنه to dispose off the blood where no body could see it. AbduLlah رضي الله عنه went and then returned and then the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم asked, “Have you disposed off the blood?” He رضي الله عنه said, “Yes O’ Messenger of Allah!” He صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “What did you do with it?” He رضي الله عنه said, “I drank it so my Iman and knowledge increases and so that I have a portion of your body in my body. My body is more befitting than the earth that it take your blood.” And the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “’AbduLlah! Glad tidings unto for the fire of Jahannam can not touch that body that has blood flowing through it.”

The thing is AbduLlah رضي الله عنه ‘s drinking the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم‘s blood is something we would regard as gross but we can not understand his love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم
